What are the top three skills journalism students should learn in college?:
Writing, writing and writing, I can’t emphasize it enough.
Plus, try and get practice turning as many stories as you can because speed can either be your worst enemy or your best friend under a deadline.
What were your duties at ATVN? :
Weather Anchor, Reporter, Writer/Shooter/Editor, Director, Technical Director
How did ATVN prepare you for your career?:
ATVN truly functions as a real news station, so making the transition from school to the “real world” was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.
Additionally, I was given the opportunity to do weather for the newscast. It was there I found my niche. I immediately pursued weather upon graduation.
What is your advice to aspiring journalists?:
Don’t underestimate yourself, aim high!
Plus don’t limit yourself, try and learn as much as you can within your newsroom. Learning new skills will only make you better.
What should graduates keep in mind when negotiating their first job?:
Again, don’t underestimate yourself, a USC/ATVN grad always has a serious head start, believe me.
