So much news, so little time
I make an honest and fruitful attempt to follow the wire and CNN bitsource which I admit I don't do perfectly but have been progressively been getting better at.The most difficult part has been coming across a story that would cater to our audience and then having to find video or see who I can send out to interview while I have five people asking me something. I learned yesterday that delegating is important, but it still makes me nervous knowing that I am adding a job to someone else's work load, hoping that they get the work done. The easiest part for me is keeping track of the MJ's and assignment editors. I usually keep track of whose coming in and assign them stories in the rundown for them to work on when they show up. The assignment editors are a great help during the afternoon when we are trying to confirm interviews with experts and coordinating schedules with reporters. Since they are right behind me I usually overhear the progress of the interviews and have a sense of what's going on and who we have confirmed with. The most difficult thing to keep track of are reporters. After being one last semester I completely understand the reporter's frustration when their producer calls them while the reporter is in an interview or getting some great b-roll. This makes me hesitant to pester them, but also the plan they tell me in the morning can change drastically by the afternoon meeting which I discovered yesterday. The way I address this is by getting big blocks of updates from everyone at the same time. I think of it as a giant surge of information that I take in and regurgitate onto sticky notes around my computer.
