Make Air Not Art
We knew going into Thursday’s show it was going to be crazy. During class we heard horror stories from Wednesday about live shots failing and video not streaming back and I know Mike and I were both hoping we had come up with a better plan.
We sent two reporters to UCLA to cover the Board of Regents vote for a 32 percent fee increase. They went together in the morning and we planned to send a Writer/Shooter/Editor around 2 pm so Madeline Scinto could head back to the newsroom and over to her studio shift.
The only problem is even though UCLA is only 13 miles away, somehow it takes 2 hours to get back from there! Madeline didn’t make it back until just after 5 pm. That means we didn’t have any video for the top of our show at 5 pm. And just for a point of reference, 5 pm is when the studio crew arrives for run thoroughs. This is slightly difficult when there’s not much to run through.
I’m not quite sure how, but the show got on the air. I don’t think any video missed it’s time slot. And I doubled as video producer and Assistant Director in the studio since Madeline couldn’t make it in time. It was a crazy, interesting day full of new experiences. While it was stressful, I’m kind of glad we had a day like this before the semester was finished. It’s good to know how to adapt for near-crises.
