I'm Sad To Have My Wednesdays Back?
After what has felt like the fastest five months of my entire life, I cannot believe my semester of producing is over and that I am actually sad to see it go! If you would have asked me just a few short months ago for some words of advice about producing, I probably would have advised the prospective Journalism 403 student to steer his or her course desires in a completely different direction -- the class is hard work!
But now, as I've emerged from what seemed like the longest and darkest (literally the darkest: it's a little weird to wake up on producing days before the sun rises only to come home after the sun has set) tunnel, I want to tell all the future ATVN producers out there to do exactly the opposite: take this class!
Not only has it been one of greatest leadership experiences I have ever had, but I have learned much more about myself, ATVN, producing and broadcast news in general than I ever thought I would. Honestly, when I started as a producer, I had NO idea what I was doing. But somehow, along the way, my classmates and I have emerged as totally efficient producers, leaders, supervisors and communicators -- capable of running a newsroom of our peers, calmly reacting to some super stressful situations, possessing superior judgement about stories and creatively crafting their development, and (for the most part) keeping confident and poised throughout the entire process.
I would advise anyone who has even a generic desire to grow as a leader, a communicator, a creative thinker and a problem solver to take this course. It was truly rewarding and it has felt so good to know that I can spend a semester successfully doing some of the hardest work I have ever done. We did it!!
