Balancing Web and Graphics
Being web producer this week was pretty intense. This was only my second time being web producer, and after having a three week break from it I found myself lost. I found myself having good stories to write, but not enough time to actually work on them. Also one thing that was hard was the fact that I only had one writer. I need to learn to prioritize more, and put out at least one story before noon.
I found myself slightly overwhelmed, even though it wasn't as hectic as it could have been. Also for some reason I found myself scared to ask for help, and that really hurt me in the long run. Asking for help is never a bad thing, and I need to realize that. Although I know that ATVN is run like a professional news station, we are all students learning.
Another thing that I learned was to not spend hours on one story. When doing this it neglects other stories that could be posted on the web. I also learned that when I want to add quotes using twitter really helps, because you can get instant feedback. Another thing to do is browse the web for reaction on stories. For example, we did a story about the new Apple iPad, and how it can heat up as hot as 116 degrees. Besides sending out a tweet about it, we checked the apple website to see if customers posted anything. We found hundreds of comments from different people on this issue.
When working on the web, being efficient is important, but it is also important to spell check everything. Copy editing plays a big role, and a lot of mistakes that I had could have been prevented if I just spell checked my work. Next time I am web producer I will take a deep breath, and do a better job.
