Diving In: The Morning Meeting

Truly, one of my favorite parts of the news day is the morning meeting. I know, I sound insane. No one wants to be up at 8am, at work, chugging that triple shot latte they were barely able to drag themselves to buy in the morning- but hear me out!

What's great about the morning meeting is the fact that you're shaping the news, whether you know it or not. Sure, we're a student-run organization with a limited viewing base, but that doesn't mean that we don't have some control over the news cycle. To me, that's the best part of the job. We're able to pitch and follow through with stories that we find important, interesting, and underreported on cable or network news stations.

However, despite my love of the morning meetings, I still find it hard to participate at my fullest every day. It can be difficult to have a story you're really excited about covering on tonight's news get floated as the day goes on, or not have enough usable elements to be aired in the evening. The possibility of having stories not work out later on in the day just goes to show how much more needs to be brought to the table in the morning meeting. When we have lots of good ideas to offer reporters and MJs in the morning, then both the reporters and MJs will be more willing to go out and cover stories to the best of their abilities. Furthermore, if a story does end up getting floated later on in the day, then we'll have another great story to take its place.

In the future, I'm going to try to come in with as many great ideas as possible so that we'll always have a great selection of story choices- even if I will have to grab an extra cup of coffee in the morning or wake up a few minutes earlier to do it.
