Don't Hesitate To Communicate

A Poem

Today was the first day of ATVN and I could hardly wait for the newscast to begin!

We started at 8 with an empty rundown, but around 12 o'clock we weren't foolin' around.

There were pressers and packages and interviews to be had so we called up our MJs, reporters and EP shadow Brad.

A lot needed to get done in what we thought was enough time, but I could never shake the feeling we were falling behind.

I had to assign stories, watch videos and check scripts.

If it wasn't for Rebecca Haggerty going over what I'd missed I can whole-heartedly say I would have lost it.

The entire twelve hours felt like a juggling act. So, I was very happy to find out the other producers had my back.

I initially thought that I could handle it all until I realized if I didn't ask for some help I'd all too quickly drop the ball.

Our lead producer Kylie helped me find videos on CNN.

Our graphics producer Fernando made sure all the graphics were in.

When I needed a hand answering a few questions I didn't know it was nice to get a helping hand from Fernando.

Like today, I had forgotten how to set up our Skype and Fernando walked me through it so next time I'd get it right.

Or when I wasn't sure what MJ was doing what Kylie was there to help me nip it in the bud.

In order to stay on top of your day's show it's super important to keep everyone in the know.

I think we were able to get things done so well, because this time around we'd come out of our shells.

In the future I plan to take note of my tasks, so I can confidently answer what's left to do when Stacy asks.

I'll also walk around and greet all of my MJs, including volunteers.

Then more things will get done and the work will be fair.

I was happy with how I assigned stories out, but I hope to get better with roaming about.

To ensure our reporters are working in a timely way so that all our packages air by the end of the day.

I forgot to be sure our reporters were all fine so when it was time to run-through the show I'd nearly lost my mind.

Now I see what good collaboration can do.

We're all here for each other to make sure nothing falls through.

And even when it did we picked the pieces back up, gave a pat on our backs and never gave up.

So, when you're feeling unsure or things aren't going too great.

Remember you have an entire team behind you and be sure to communicate.
