Keep Giving New Information

TAGS:

It’s always important to provide viewers with the most current information when covering current stories that are still developing. But at times it certainly is very difficult to make old stories fresh. Take the missing Malaysia airliner for instance. This story has been going on for a month, and the most recent news is that search is still continuing. While that information has been at the forefront of the coverage over the last few weeks, it is still very important. People are missing and the airliner still hasn’t been found.

As the lead producer, I have to take it upon myself to make sure every aspect of each story is covered. Not only that, it’s up to the lead producer to find ways to make the story resonate with the local audience. For the Malaysia airline I would attempt to speak to aviation experts, and even try to get in contact with a family member of one of the missing passengers. Providing valuable elements is the best way to make coverage new and attractive.

As the graphics and video teammate, it’s important to make sure that the video and/or sound is most current and that the graphics captions are captivating enough to draw in viewer interest. The video teammate also has to make sure that the multimedia journalist that was assigned the story wrote clearly and concisely.  The writer should look to provide background information for those who may have never heard of the story, and seek to provide the latest developments.

All in all, the important thing with big stories is to provide as many valuable elements in your coverage as possible. That’s the way you keep viewers interested.
