Big stories that are ongoing are as important as breaking news. For example, the missing Malaysia Airlines plane story is very relevant to our lives considering that many people use flights for transportation.
As a lead producer, one must see the big picture and consider many local angles of the story. For example, the Fort Hood shooting can be covered as a story related to mental health issues. We can talk to veterans who have experienced mental health issues and learn how people cope with such problems. Stories of local veterans will engage viewers by creating an emotional connection.
As a CNN/graphics teammate, one must go through CNN videos throughout the day, looking for new developments. When breaking news happens, some CNN/graphics teammates might be so focused on brand-new coverage that they miss an important development in an on ongoing story. For example, news that two signals from the Malaysian Airlines plane have been detected is a very important development that affects many people (families of passengers, etc.) and that we should not miss. OTS should reflect the crucial development but still provide general information for people who may not be aware of the news.
As a video teammate, one must assign MJs to write the scripts under the assumption that people are not aware of the entire story. After briefly summarizing the ongoing news, the script should reflect whatever information is recent and relevant to viewers. The process of editing videos works in a similar way. Video should reflect the script, and editors should try to use the newscast coverage whenever possible.
