Story Order
After our news team has the morning meeting, we are left with a list of a bunch of stories we want to do and elements we want to include. What we have to do is take that big jumble from the board and translate it into a coherent newscast that has a logical flow to it.
Yesterday, as video producer, I helped by telling our lead producer what stories had the best video so she could factor that into her decision. When I was lead producer, I began by putting the stories into the rundown in a general order of importance. When I started hearing back from our reporters I decided what packages I wanted to use in the A block and what ones for B. I didn't want the A block to be too package-heavy because then it would get boring and not flow.
I decided to lead with a package on Bell because that day was the first day they had been back in court since the previous year, and it was a local story featuring conflict and public figures, and our reporter had gotten great sound from residents. Our next best package was one about Egypt, but from Bell I followed with some local stories because it wouldn't make sense to jump to international. My idea was to group like stories together. I also had to remember not to use all my strong stories in the A block, so I decided to start the B block with our Egypt package.
By grouping like stories together, splitting up packages with vos and vsvs, and keeping in mind what our strongest pieces were, I did my best to put together a logical and exciting newscast!
