Landslide Cleanup
In addition to the closure of the transition road from the westbound San Bernardino Freeway to the northbound Orange Freeway, the road connecting the northbound Chino Valley (71) Freeway to the northbound 57 is closed as a precaution.
Caltrans is now working to excavate the land that is blocking the transition road from the westbound San Bernardino Freeway to the northbound Orange Freeway. Caltrans got a report earlier today that someone may have been trapped under the rubble after the landslide happened at about 8:40 this morning, said PIO Patrick Chandler.
California Highway Patrol said it may take about a week before it reopens the road, but Chandler said the cleanup could take longer.
"With this active moving landslide right now, this roadway is just not safe for anyone to be on." Chandler said.
Geologists surveyed the site for hours earlier today to look for any other cracks or dangerous areas of the hill. Meanwhile, rocks are still falling down the hill periodically where the landslide occurred.
Geologists estimate the hill is about 2,500 cubic yards of rock, sand and dirt, according to Chandler.
"It's dangerous." Chandler said. "It's enough to block the road. This is an entire hillside."
CHP suggests these alternate freeway routes until the road is cleared and reopened:
-Go east on the 10 Freeway, and north on the 15 Freeway to the 210 Freeway
-Go west on the 10 Freeway, and north on the 605 Freeway to the 210 Freeway
-Take the 60 Freeway and go north on the 605 Freeway
