Local 9/11 Commemorative Events
Southern Californians join the nation in commemorating the tenth anniversary of September 11th this weekend. Below is a list of events scheduled for Sunday.
8:00 a.m.: The City of Burbank hosts a remembrance ceremony featuring remarks by Mayor Talamantes, Fire Chief Ray Krakowski and Police Chief Scott LaChasse on the steps of City Hall.
9:00 a.m.: The Los Angeles Fire Department holds a remembrance ceremony at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Fire Chief Brian L. Cummings, Police Chief Charlie Beck and Former Governor Gray Davis are expected to speak, among others. A 22-foot tall steel beam originally part of the Twin Towers lobby structure will be on display.
9:00 a.m.: Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum in Compton sponsors a walk from the Compton Courthouse to the museum's hangar. After finishing the walk, participants are invited to help clean and repaint the hangar and attend a remembrance ceremony for 9/11 victims. (Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., the walk begins at 11:00 a.m.)
10:00 a.m.: West Hollywood local responders, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and churches will ring sirens and bells in honor of 9/11 victims.
11:00 a.m.: Pepperdine University kicks off a series of 9/11 remembrance events with a reading of the 2,977 victims' names. At 1:00 p.m., there will be a special screening of United 93, a film about the crew and passengers of the fateful plane that was crashed into a field near Shanksville, Penn. The film screening will be followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m.
11:00 a.m.: The Pasadena 9/11 Committee and local air force veteran John McDannel unveil a memorial at the intersection of New York Drive and Bradley Street.
11:00 a.m.: The Ventura County Emergency Planning Council holds a memorial ceremony featuring several musical tributes including bells and bagpipes.
12:00 p.m.: USC honors the victims of 9/11 with a memorial lead by university president C.L. Max Nikias, USC Dean of Religious Life Varun Soni and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Immediately following the service, attendees can participate in a series of volunteer events planned by the Office of Religious Life.
12:30 p.m.: The Pop Luck Club, a non-profit organization to support gay fathers and their children in the Los Angeles area, hosts a family remembrance for three former members who were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
1:00 p.m.: The Grove remembers 9/11 with an honorary tree-planting ceremony in The Grove Town Square and The Park.
1:00 p.m.: The Pasadena Museum of History welcomes local families for an afternoon of flag making and outdoor games. Visitors can also take pictures with an old police car.
4:00 p.m.: The Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Committee unveils a memorial garden, located on the grounds of the Beverly Hills Fire Department.
4:30 p.m.: The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels hosts a free memorial concert featuring the Angeles Chorale.
