Mexican President Felipe Calderon Comes to Los Angeles
On Wednesday, Mexican President Felipe Calderon met with leaders of the Mexican Community in Los Angeles. Only leaders regsistered with the Mexican Consulate were allowed to attend. A presentation on the documentary "The Royal Tour" was held in the Los Angeles Convention Center.
"The Royal Tour" showcases Emmy Award-winning CBS News travel editor Peter Greensberg traveling throughout Mexico with the nation's leader. From Chihuahua to Cozumel, from tops of the Temple of Kukulkan in Chichen to hidden pyramids, the documentary shows the pair exploring Mexico's historical beauty.
Greenberg and President Felipe Calderon reveal parts of Mexico that are less known, but accessible to travelers. The documentary allows President Felipe Calderon to show that Mexico is more than the typical beaches, dusty border patrol with high drug violence, and people wearing only sombreros and drinking tequila.
"Mexico, like so many countries, firmly understands the importance of travel and tourism to build bridges of understanding. It is somewhat embarassing that the U.S. government has never fully understood the economic power and social necessity of travel and tourism," said Peter Greensberg according to PBS.
Calderon's visit comes one day after 35 bodies were dumped on a busy avenue in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Authorities believe the bound, seminude, tortured bodies were unloaded by gang members connected with the Zetas cartel.
