Gadhafi's Body No Longer On Display
Libyan officials announced Monday that the body of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi will be pulled from public display.
Gadhafi's mutilated corpse had been open to public viewing since he was shot in the head four days before.
Libyans lined up on Saturday to view the body, which had been dragged through the streets before being lain out in a cold storage container.
Gadhafi's body was displayed next to his son, Moatssim, and a former army chief.
The three bodies had been briefly removed from the storage unit for autopsies at Misrata hospital, which were completed Sunday. Doctors confirmed that Gadhafi died from a gunshot wound to the head. The bodies were then returned to the storage unit.
The 69-year-old former dictator was captured, tortured, and ultimately shot in his hometown Sirte, about two months after rebel forces took over Tripoli.
Those who captured him said the former dictator did not resist.
"When we captured him, he was like a child," said Hassan Doua, a commander in Libya whose fighters found Gadhafi in Sirte. "He hardly looked us in the eye. It was very hard for us to believe this man was the reason for all the killing."
Although Gadhafi's body has been pulled from display, its burial is an issue that has yet to be sorted out. Some fear that burying the former dictator would give the pro-Gadhafi faction a token around which to rally.
