[UPDATE | Oct. 26, 2:13 p.m. The death toll from an earthquake in eastern Turkey has risen to 461, according to the Associated Press.

More than 1,300 people are injured and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent said many more peopleare likely still buried under the rubble.]

Turkish rescuers have worked hard in the 48 hours since the 7.2 quake first struck on Sunday to pull survivors from mangled buildings. About 1,300 people are injured.

Authorities have warned survivors against returning to their homes or entering damaged buildings.  Thousands have spent near-freezing nights in cars or tents, afraid to return to their homes.

Tents have been set up in two stadiums in Ercis, but there is only enough shelter for about 50% of survivors.  Turkish Red Crescent has set up soup kitchens for displaced families.

Still, all families have not been able to recieve adequate aid and there have been reports of fist fights in front of aid trucks.

The Turkish government said it would provide survivors with temporary homes and plans to rebuild damged areas with better houses.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones. In 1999, two earthquakes with hit northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

Rescuers found a 2-week old baby alive in the rubble early Tuesday.  The Associated Press has some raw video from the scene.  The BBC reports that the baby's mother and grandmother have also been rescued alive.
