Penn State Officals Surrender in Sex-Abuse Case

The coaches stepped down amidst charges of sexual abuse with young boys.

Two Penn State surrendered Monday to perjury in their grand jury testimony and failed to report suspect child-sexual abuse by a former coach, according to a report.

Senior Vice President Gary Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley appeared in a Harrisburg courtroom, where a judge set bail at $75,000. The two are accused of failing to alert police complaints that former assistants football coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused eight boys. They are also charged with lying to a state grand jury investigating the former defensive coordinator.

Both stepped down from their posts late Sunday after charges were announced.

Authorities charged Sandusky with sexual abuse to eight boys over the age of 15 through his charity for at-risk youth.

The allegations Sandusky, who started the Second Mile in 1977, range from sexual advances to touching to oral and anal sex. The young men testified before the grand jury that they were in their early teens when some of the abuse occurred. There is evidence that even younger children may have been victimized.

Sandusky’s attorney Joe Amendola said his client has been aware of the accusations for about three years and has maintained his innocence.

Curley's lawyer, Caroline Roberto claims that the Schultz and Curley are innocent and will seek to have the charges dismissed. Roberto said the case is weak while Schultz's lawyer, Tom Farrell, said the men did what they followed protocol by informing their superiors of the accusations.

Curley and Schultz have the unconditional support of university President Graham Spanier as well, according to a statement released Saturday. Spanier called the allegations “troubling” but predicted the school officials would be exonerated.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelley has not said if Spanier is a target of the investigation.

"This is an ongoing and active investigation…we are determined to quickly respond to any new witnesses or any additional information that may appear,”

Earlier Monday, investigators encouraged anyone who would accuse Sandusky of sexual assault to step forward and talk to police. Kelly specifically asked that a child reportedly assaulted by Sandusky in a view of a graduate student to call detectives about the 2002 encounter.

“When you look at the totality of the circumstances and the number of victims that we have, I don’t think it would be beyond the realm of possibility that there are other victims that exist here,” Kelly said.

Linda Kelley should also prosecute the offenders of those on her books whom the internet displays as unfortunately victimized children -- often in their own homes (go Ed Schultz Show!)
