High Winds Cause Damage Overnight [Updated]
[Updated | Dec. 1 1:47 p.m. Southern California Edison reports as of 1:45 p.m. 226,000 of their customers are without power. The hardest hit areas near Los Angeles are San Gabriel, Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, La Canada, Monrovia and Sierra Madre.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power also announced that 141,000 of their 1.4 million customers are without power. If a downed power line is encountered, LADWP recommends calling them immediately at 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
The county Department of Public Health is warning Los Angeles residents that food-borne illnesses and carbon monoxide poisoning are among the health risks while power is out. Public Health Director Jonathan Fielding advised residents to not use their stoves, barbecues or ovens to heat their home due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.]
The Department of Public Safety sent officers to the scene early Thursday morning as high winds blew down power lines in North University Campus.
Power lines in the south alley of West 28th Street between Figueroa Street and University Avenue have been blown down. Power to the south side of The Row has been out since around 1:30 Thursday morning.
There may also be wires down in the parking lot at 814 28th Street, according to DPS. No one is allowed to enter the parking lot at this time, including residents.
DPS is warning students to stay away from the area. Power lines can be extremely dangerous and may still be charged and hot.
Strong winds Wednesday night also knocked down a tree in front of Doheny Library on University Park Campus.
LAX was also affected as strong winds knocked debris into the south runway Wednesday night. Baggage screening was closed temporarily and planes were diverted.
At 7:10am Thursday, Southern California Edison released through their twitter, @socaledison, "#LAWind has 213K customers w/o pwr right now. #SanGabrielValley & Foothills hardest hit. Watch 4 lines down & call 911 if you see one."
SCE released another statement at 8:29 am saying crews were working to restore power and thanked everyone for their patience.
Due to the high volume of calls, city repair crews have an unknown time of arrival for repair.
El Segundo and neighborhoods surrounding the airport lost power Wednesday night for over an hour.
Wow! We need some pics posted of Temple City. It's totally a disaster zone. Crushed houses, pine trees blocking streets, power lines dangling and sparking. Anyone with a camera please go take some shots on Val street off of Baldwin. The highest winds I ever experienced in SGV were 70 mph. This has got to be like the fury of hell hit them!
