City Hall's Lawn to Undergo Renovation
LA City Hall lawn has been approved for a $390,000 landscaping makeover to rejuvenate the grass that had been destroyed by the Occupy LA encampments last fall.
Despite the fact that restoring the lawn to its original state would cost $76,000, the city wanted to move forward with the renovation on grounds of reducing water usage.
The newly approved lawn will contain of 51% less grass, and instead replace the space with with several draught resistant California native plants such as salvias, succulents and California Holly.
The lawn will also feature decomposed granite in several areas.
The new lawn is estimated to cost $135,000 in maintenance fees, almost double the $76,000 required to maintain the current one. The main selling point for this new design is water conservation, as the city will save $2,000 a year in water costs.
Despite the substantial cost of renovating the lawn, City officials claim it will be worth the cost, as the new lawn is expected to be a much more eventful location, as they expect to hold 165 events annually on the premises.
