Local Students and Teachers Protest Adult Education Cuts

Students fear that cutting adult education would also limit their chances of a better life.

Shouting "Save our schools," and "Yes we can," adult education students and teachers held two demonstrations Wednesday in protest of the proposed closure of adult education programs due to budget cuts.

The first demonstration was held at North Valley Occupational Center in Mission Hills. The second was held at Evans Adult School in Los Angeles.

Adult education teacher Julia Dewey believes cutting adult education will take away opportunities from people looking for a better life.

"These are for students who are the parents of the K through 12 [children] and they too want education. They are the ones putting food on the table, " said Dewey. "They need better jobs, better opportunities and this school is what's giving them that opportunity. To cut it off would be a tragedy for Los Angeles."

Others protesting, like student Janeth Lopez, are concerned that this budget cut will especially effect single mothers.

"What about the teenager...usually women who have a child, " said Lopez. "After two to three years they cannot change the their lives. They are looking for schools like this one in order to get better and start a new life. What happened to this American dream for women?"

Budget recommendations regarding this issue will be reviewed by the Los Angeles School Board in March.

The Los Angeles Unified School District declined to comment on the protests.

Wow that's a tough one Cheree. And as mom to two sons, it sounds rethar familiar.Without knowing any details I'd say your response would depend on how old your ten is and if you think he/she would be able to learn from the experience if you do bail them out. For sure it sounds like its time to take away the keys and have a tough contractual conversation about what is expected and a way to pay you back quicly if you do the bailout. If you want more please email me at .Sending you courage and hope!~RJ

There's an error in the narration of the video. The demonstration at Evans Adults school was organized by students. Their organization is called Evans United Adult Students, and they have broad community support.
