Campus Security Issues Addressed

More steps are being taken to increase student safety on and off campus.

After the West Adams shooting, the USC community's concerns about campus security were addressed by USC vice president for student affairs, Michael L. Jackson, and Chief Carey Drayton of the USC Department of Public Safety Thursday.

In regards to increased security, they answered:

"In total, USC now has approximately 70 cameras and 50 license plate cameras in the community. There are 34 security ambassadors. The department has 260 employees. The added security has resulted in substantially reduced crime over the past several years."

When searching for off-campus housing, DPS also provides a map with places where there is DPS patrol.

Although DPS states that students should be mindful of the safety around off-campus apartments and housing, the crime in USC and around metropolitan Los Angeles has greatly decreased in the past few years.

USC is also working towards providing more housing options closer to campus:

"USC and private developers have added thousands of student beds in recent years, and the university plans to add 5,200 new student beds in its proposed redevelopment of University Village."

To increase security in and around USC, USC is working to install more streetlights and increase visibility in the streets:

"Over the past few years, USC had worked with the city and the Department of Urban Forestry to trim trees that block streetlights in the North University Park area. USC has funded additional light fixtures in the area and regularly inspects the area for burnt-out streetlights. Finally, the university has worked with the Department of Water and Power to install floodlights on many of the department’s utility poles in the area. The university will continue to work with the city to determine whether additional streetlights can be added."
