Suspicious Package Deemed Safe

The LAPD Bomb Squad reported to the USC campus to examine the package Sunday afternoon.

A suspicious package found on the USC campus Sunday did not having any threatening material in it. 

Senior Bomb Technician Don Thompson told ATVN the bomb squad performed diagnostic tests on the package and discovered it was a paper bag that had been stapled shut and contained three wads of paper in it.

The package was found outside on the lawn between North Residential Hall and Birnkrant Residential College.

USC students received a Trojan Alert text message about the suspicious package shortly after 4:30 p.m.

They received a text around 5:25 p.m. stating that the LAPD Bomb Squad was on the scene to evaluate the package. A final text message was sent out around 5:40 p.m., which stated that the area was clear and detailed what was in the bag. 

Police had taped off an area around Birnkrant and North. Parking Structure D, which is across the street from the dormitories and lies at the intersection of Jefferson and Figueroa, was also closed off.

People were able to return to the area shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Thousands of people were on the USC campus Sunday afternoon to attend the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
