Feds Raid 3 Pot Dispensaries, Begin Crackdown

The US Attorney's office filed complaints against pot shop landlords and gave 68 pot shops two weeks to comply with federal law

The crackdown on medical marijuana in Los Angeles entered a new chapter Tuesday when federal officials raided several dispensaries, issued warning letters to dozens more, and filed complaints against property owners leasing to pot shops.

The US Attorney's office filed civil asset forfeiture complaints against three Eagle Rock property owners who lease to the medical marijuana dispensaries "Together for Change Collective," "House of Kush," and "ER Collective."

Earlier this week, the US Attorney's office sent warning letters to 68 marijuana dispensaries, informing them of a 2-week window to comply with federal law. Federal law bans marijuana and supersedes the California law that legalizes medical marijuana.

The Los Angeles Police Department, the City Attorney's office, and the District Attorney's office all cooperated with federal authorities to carry out investigations resulting in yesterday's raids.

The LAPD said the clinics targeted are actually illegal for-profit businesses that violate the spirit of the medical dispensary law and promote crime.

The crackdown on dispensaries is the latest development in an ongoing battle over the legality of medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Los Angeles City Council had approved a ban on storefront medical marijuana dispensaries but the ordinance was halted after a popular petition compelled the issue to be decided by voters.

The City Council has a week to determine how to proceed on the potential referendum. A repeal of the ban, a special election, or inclusion of the referendum on the March 5, 2013, ballot are all viable options.
