The Endeavour took flight once again Thursday morning from Houston attached to a modified transport plane which will carry the shuttle to its new home in Los Angeles.

The Endeavour was scheduled to arrive in California midday Thursday and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, a day before it will arrive at its permanent home in Los Angeles.

The officially retired shuttle will be placed in the California Science Center in Exposition Park where it will remain on display.

One of the highlights of the shuttle's final journey is that it passed over Tucson, Ariz., where retired astronaut Mark Kelly, the last person to command a mission on the shuttle, and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, reside.

According to the Associated Press, the Tucson flyover was requested by Kelly, who said it would allow NASA to honor his wife's legacy of advocating American human spaceflight.

Once it lands in Los Angeles on Friday, the shuttle is scheduled to be transported on city streets in mid-October.

The Endeavour's journey to Los Angeles is the last flight for a space shuttle, since the Atlantis has been residing at Kennedy and the Discovery has been on display in a hangar in the Smithsonian Institution since April.

The shuttle logged over 123 million miles and circled Earth nearly 4,700 times since its debut in 1992. It flew 25 times before it was officially retired.
