CSU and UC Board of Trustees Postpone Tuition Increases
The Board of Trustees for California State Universities and Universities of California agreed to not increase tuition fees Tuesday at the urging of Governor Jerry Brown.
The CSU Board began a two-day meeting in which the board's finance committee would be asked to accept a recommended support budget request for 2013-14.
Brown made an appearance at CSU's meeting Tuesday and stated that cost should be controlled, so students don't have to be faced with hikes in tuition fees.
Brown announced that he planned to attend the UC regents meeting Wednesday.
He expressed that tuition hikes affect low-income students and inquired the timing of these tuition hikes as it is a week after voters approved the quarter-cent sales tax increase.
"This is no time to be raising fees of any kind," said Brown. "Voters gave us billions in new revenue, now we have to use that very judiciously."
CSU Freshman, Arli Diz felt that the fees would not be helpful.
Peter Lam, CSU Sophomore, stated that it would take him five years to graduate as he withdrew from some classes. He felt it would be more complicated because financial aid would stop after the fourth year.
