Metrolink Announces Safety Upgrade
Metrolink announced on Thursday that they will be implementing a $17 million safety upgrade at four railroad crossings along the Glendale Corridor.
The major construction will start in January and will install fences, or "sealed corridors," along the tracks to prevent trespassing and collisions.
The city of Glendale, which is paying for the project along with federal, state and county funds, will also implement:
- Wider roads and sidewalks
- Automatic gates for car and pedestrians
- High-tech traffic sensors
- Satellite tracking for trains to prevent collisions
Only two crossings in Los Angeles County meet the highest safety standards, while more than 100 are in need of major safety overhauls, according to Metrolink. The Glendale Corridor will be the first area to undergo significant improvements, partially because of an accident at the Chevy Chase intersection in 2005, involving three trains and a vehicle, that ended in the deaths of 11 people.
