Car Chase Ends Blocks Away from USC
A long-distance police chase ended just blocks away from USC's University Park Campus Tuesday afternoon.
California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs said it was a pair of burglary suspects who led police across the 91 Freeway in Riverside and onto the 110 Freeway where their vehicle reached speeds over 100 mph.
After exiting the freeway, the silver sedan winded through surface streets in South Los Angeles and nearly struck several pedestrians including a woman and child who were in a crosswalk.
The pursuit came to an apparant halt when the male driver jumped out of the car and ran into a nearby neighborhood while talking on a cellphone.
The female passenger took control of the car and sideswiped a bus and another vehicle while trying to squeeze between them at a congested intersection.
She then stopped her vehicle near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Normandie Avenue and ran through a nearby residential area. Various television helicopter crews were able to follow her through a maze of housing complexes because of her bright pink jacket.
Police set up a perimeter in the area and arrested both the woman and a male suspect believed to be the motorist dressed in a different shirt and baseball cap.
Both suspects are currently in police custody.
