'Outsider' James Seeks City's Top Post

Kevin James - the openly gay conservative radio host - takes on three longtime Democratic politicians in the race to be LA's next mayor.

Kevin James considers himself “the outsider,” in the 2013 Los Angeles Mayoral Election. The term certainly holds true when considering many of James’ background and history.

He is a gay, conservative Republican who has hosted a radio show, Red Eye Radio, on 870 KRLA AM. The show has featured the leading conservative figures like Glenn Beck, Dennis Prager, and Bill Bennett.

With Los Angeles having such a large Democratic population, James already has an uphill battle ahead of him.

One of James’ most popular and often repeated campaign strategies is to associate his three main Democratic opponents, Eric Garcetti, Wendy Gruel and Jan Perry, with the failed policies and programs of the last few years.

James’ campaign has specifically narrowed its sights in on former city Controller Wendy Greuel.

A video titled "Greuel’s Gold Card Scandal" was published on James’ campaign YouTube page on February 6. The video seeks to expose some inconsistencies in a scandal in which city workers received cards that exempted them from paying parking tickets.

second video focused on the millions of dollars waste Greuel has claimed to have identified - and eliminated - as City Controller.

Despite the negative campaigning, James still finds himself third, according to a recent poll by SurveyUSA. He trails both Eric Garcetti (26 percent) and Wendy Greuel (23 percent) with only 14 percent of the vote.

With the March 5 election day fast approaching, many of James’ supporters have begun questioning if the "outsider campaign" is too little, too late.
