Northeast Recovering from Blizzard

Some cities were hit with over three feet of snow.

The northeastern part of the United States is recovering from the Winter Storm Nemo that hit the New England region this weekend.

Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York governors declared states of emergency on Friday as the heavy snow and winds emerged.

The blizzard has dumped up to 40 inches of snow with hurricane force winds, killing at least nine people and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

Residents of these states stocked up on survival goods and gas in anticipation of the worst.

The hardest of the storm hit the Northeast on Friday before moving north to Canadian regions.

"It took my dad two hours to plow half our driveway in Maine, and in Boston they weren't allowed to drive," said USC senior Carolyne DeBlois. "I've never seen a storm like that and I was insanely jealous [and wanted to be back home]. The snowbacks were at least five feet high."

Before the snow even hit the ground, over 5,000 flights throughout the United States were cancelled. In addition, Amtrak cancelled services, residents were told to stay off the roads, and businesses and schools closed for the day.

"As soon as I heard about the incoming storm, I cancelled all of my plans and prepared to stay indoors the entire weekend. From Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon I was indoors," said Portia Amofa, a student at Bostin University.

By Friday afternoon, it was determined that the storm was not as big of a threat as anticipated. However, Nemo did cause power outages and accidents in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

"Well it hasn't been too bad. It doesn't usually stick, and the one time it did we only got a couple of inches," said Angel Christina-Gardner, a student at Howard University.

Most counties however were hit with record breaking snowfall with reports of five states with locations of 30 inches of snow or more.

Over the weekend, most cities focused on clearing the roads, restoring power, and ensuring that public transportation was back on its regular schedule.
