Onion Apologizes for Crude Tweet
The satirical news source The Onion apologized Monday morning for a vulgar tweet that was posted during Sunday's Academy Awards about nine-year-old Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis.
The organization famous for poking fun and creating jarring, fake headlines posted an apology on their Facebook page in response to the outrage over the tweet that called the "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star the 'c' word.
"It was crude and offensive- not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting," said Steve Hannah, the CEO of The Onion.
Hannah also noted that the Tweet was taken down within an hour of publication and that they have instituted new Twitter procedures to keep something like this from happening again down the line.
The tweet left some celebrities outraged including Chelsea Clinton who tweeted that the headline was "outrageous and unacceptable."
The Onion has over 4.5 million Twitter followers and many said Sunday night's Tweet won't stop them from following in the future.
"It's satire. What do you expect?" said college junior, Zach Drum. "I'll continue to follow. I'll roll my eyes at the over-the-top posts and laugh at things I think are funny. It's just how it is."
But not everyone has that same attitude.
"No child should ever be called that word, either satirically or seriously," said Sharon Ryan, a parent. "It went a step too far, and I will not be returning to reading The Onion any time soon."
