John Mutlow and Gail Peter Borden received awards from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

The national association, which includes more than 100 university architectural programs, honors architectural educators for exemplary work in building design, community collaborations, scholarship and service.

Mutlow, professor and immediate past chair of graduate studies, received one of four national Distinguished Professor Awards, which recognizes sustained creative achievement in the advancement of architectural education.

He has designed affordable housing in Southern California since the 1970s and most recently was honored in 2012 with two Los Angeles Architectural Awards for Stovall Villa, an affordable senior housing project, and The Courtyard at La Brea, a mixed use and mixed occupancy project in West Hollywood for emancipated youths.

Borden received the Faculty Design Award for his 99K House, designed with Brian Delford Andrews of the University of Arizona.

The 99K House was an international competition in 2008 in which participants designed a single-family house in Houston using sustainable building practices and materials with a construction budget under $99,000. The design by Borden and Andrews was a finalist.
