Sorority Campaigns Against Rape in Wake of New Delhi Trial
Delta Phi Omega, an American-based South Asian-interest sorority, is involved in efforts to end brutality against women around the world, and became even more passionate about the cause after hearing about the New Delhi rape.
"Since this incident occurred in New Delhi, it's given us more of an 'at home' experience in that we feel even more deeply affected, especially since we have sisters who are from Delhi itself," Delta Phi Omega Service Director SriVani Ganti said.
Members of the Delta Phi Omega sorority are taking a stand against these brutalities by posing in photos in a crossed-arm gesture.
"This crossed-arm gesture indicates [a] kind of unity towards stopping sexual violence against women as well as just showing a sense of solidarity amongst females," Ganti said.
Photos of sorority members from chapters across the U.S. have been sent around the web in support of the United Nation's Anti-Rape campaign.
Delta Phi Omega members hope their images will show that they are taking a stand against sexual violence and using their voices to fight for this cause.
"Coming from our cultural background, it can be very difficult to stand up for women's rights because its not always necessarily accepted or wanted," Ganti said.
"We feel as young women who live in a country in which we're allowed to speak up, we need to stand up for something like this."
SPEAK UP LOUD AND CLEARLY -
US WOMEN HAVE TO FIGHT OUR OWN BATTLES AND show the world that we as women HAVE TO BE RESPECTED!!
