Spring Break Safety Tips

DPS gives students tips to have a safe spring break.

Students are eager to take some time to recover from the semester during spring break. While students should enjoy their break, DPS encourage students to take the proper precautions to keep themselves and their belongings safe.

"Drink plenty of water," said Capt. David Carlisle. "And if you go to an event with a group of friends, make sure that you leave the event with the same group of friends. Don't trust strangers."

If you are leaving for spring break, DPS encourages you to use the free parking they are provided to keep your vehicle safe.

In addition, be sure to have someone watch your house and have your mail stopped. If mail begins to pile up, it will become evident that you are gone.

To make it seem like someone is home, leave the television or radio on or put your indoor and outdoor lights on an automatic timer so there is the appearance of activity in your home.

Also, if you own a bike, be sure to put it in your room while you are away for long periods of time.

If you are staying on campus, DPS stresses the importance that you do not let anyone into the building that you do not know, lock your door, and avoid leaving doors proped open.

When you are out around town, DPS says to be careful when getting money from the ATM. Mske sure the ATM is located in a well lit location.

Make sure no one can see your PIN number when you enter it and be sure to withdraw only the amount of money you need.

Don't throw your ATM receipt away near the machine and try not to use the ATM at night.

According to DPS, you should try to go shopping during the day rather than at night.

Be alert and be aware of your surroundings when you are out. Limit the amount of money and bags you carry so you do not loose anything.

While driving, be sure you do not drive alone at night and always park in well-lighted areas. Have your keys out before going to your car and make sure you know where you parked.

Keep your belongings close to you when entering and exiting your car and no not put your belongings on top of the car.

Do not leave belongings in your car because they will attract theives. If you must keep belongings in your car, make sure they are hidden.

Sophmore Modupe Alabi is not concerned with safety over spring break.

"One of us will be home," she said.

She feels the apartment will be safe. But its not safety that she thinks will be on student's minds over break.

"Most people are worried about keeping up with the workload," she explained.
