ATVN, Neon Tommy, ARN Win SPJ Awards in Vegas

The three student news organizations won a total of seven awards.

USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism won seven awards this weekend in Las Vegas from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 11 Mark of Excellence Awards.

Our reporter Vicki Chen came in second place for Television General News Reporting for her story "Urban Barn Teaches teamwork Through Horseback Riding."

Our sister organization Neon Tommy took first place in Online News Reporting for its ongoing coverage of the shooting of two USC students in April 2012. 

Jonathan Kendrick, Neon Tommy's sports editor also won first place for Online Sports Reporting for his story "How High School Eligibility Rules Spiked Todd Hunt's Football Dreams." 

The online newsource won several other awards.

Aaron Schrank of Annenberg Radio News won first place in the Radio Feature category for his piece "A deaf man hears music."

First place winners advance to the SPJ's national student conference in Anaheim in August.
