Dorner Manhunt Victims Reach $4.2 Million

The city of Los Angeles has reached an agreement on injury claims with the two women injured during the manhunt for former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

The city of Los Angeles has reached $4.2 million settlement Tuesday with two women who were injured during the LAPD manhunt of former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

The two women were delivering papers when LAPD opened 100 rounds of gun fire on their pick up truck in Torrance this Febrary. LAPD officers opened fire after they mistook the Toyota Tacoma truck for the one Dorner had been using throughout his killing spree.

Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich and attorney Glen Jonas, who represents Margie Carranza, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, confirmed their settlement during a press conference held Tueday. However, the agreement still has to be approved by the Los Angeles City Council. If the settlement is approved, both women cannot pursue any future injury claims against the city.

Mrs. Hernandez, 71, was shot in the back, while her daughter Mrs. Carranza, 45, suffered minor injuries. Jonas had sent a nine page demand to the city of Los Angeles last month that provided an opening for negotiations. He claims negotiations lasted for weeks before an agreement was reach with attorney Carmen Trutanich on Monday.

"I hope that this case stands as an example of what lawyers and city leaders can do when they take a common sense approach to a problem that can be resolved," said Jonas.

If approved, the women have agreed to receive the payment after June 30, which marks the end of the fiscal year, in order to help the city with it's budgeting. Last month, both Hernandez and Carranza came to a civic agreement with the city that granted them $40,000 dollars for damages caused to their truck.

"In reaching this settlement we hope that Margie and Emma would be able to move on with their lives," said Trutanich, "It's a fair resolution for both parties."
