Drivers Face "Crash Course" on Distracted Driving
Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, Impact Teen Drivers and California Highway Patrol, provided driving classes for teens to experience the physical and emotional effects of distracted driving on Tuesday.
Afterwards, CHP hosted a news conference to address the dangers of it.
The event is part of Distracted Driving month, which started Monday.
During April, police will give tickets for distracted driving more than usual. Distracted driving behavior includes texting, holding a cellphone to the head or wandering attention for any reason.
Fines will start around $160 and a second offense can cost about $280.
In April 2012, about 57,000 people got tickets for distracted driving statewide, with about 450,000 people ticketed during the entire year.
