Fed Announces Redesigned $100 Bill

A blue, 3D stripe will help make the bills more secure.

The Federal Reserve finally announced a redesign of the $100 bill after a two-year delay. The new bill contains technology that makes them it more secure and will go into circulation on October 8.

Ben Franklin still appears on the front of the redesigned bill, but the Federal Reserve has now placed a copper inkwell with the Liberty Bell on it next to him.

An illusion makes the Bell appear and disappear when it is moved. The number 100 in the bottom right corner of the bill also changes from copper to green when moved.

The new bill also has rough patches on Ben Franklin's shoulder that can be felt to check the authenticity of the note. (newmoney.gov).

The most promintent feature on the redesigned $100 bill is a blue, 3D security ribbon that helps prevent against counterfiting. The stripe is made with thousands of tiny lenses that magnify the objects underneath, making them appear to be moving in the opposite direction of the bill.

Counterfeiters target $100 bills more than other, and the Federal Reserve is hoping the redesign will discourage them.

The government plans to start a campaign to inform consumers and businesses about the new bills, so they can also look out for conterfeits.

An explanation of all the bills features can be found at www.newmoney.gov.
