UCLA Water Polo Player Arrested for Rape
Hakop Kaplanyan, 18, was arrested without incident after a female student reported the incident on April 2.
The female student, an acquintance of Kaplanyan, claimed that she was assaulted inside his residence hall. Kaplanyan was released Monday on $200,000 bail. He is scheduled for a court appearance on April 25.
UCLA has already suspended Kaplanyan, who set the California Interscholastic Federation single-season record of 229 goals in 2009.
Kaplanyan's attorney posted via his Facebook page: "My Client and I informed Dean of Student Mr. Robert J. Naples and Assistant Dean of Students, Ms. Valery Holtom that we want to appeal the interim suspension of Mr. Kaplanyan's attendance at UCLA. Mr. Kaplanyan is completely innocent."
Kaplanyan was a three-time first team ALL-CIF selection before joining the UCLA water polo team.
