Elton John Performs On Campus
Music icon Elton John performed for USC students Monday night, bringing the crowd to its feet with classics such as "Benny and the Jets" and "Philadelphia Freedom."
Students lined up and down Trousdale hoping to get a chance to see Sir Elton John, who performed alongside a mix of both USC Thornton School of Music students as well as other guest performers, such as the cellist duo, 2CELLOS.
During a Q&A with Scott Goldman of the GRAMMY Foundation, John discussed his passion for music, or as he calls it his "constant companion," and recalled his roots in classical music.
He said his new album, "The Diving Board," reflects his love for the piano as well as his maturity, saying "[my record] is who I am now, not who I was."
John also addressed his hope for young students and said they are a force which can be the cause for great change.
"I have great faith in the young...the energy of youth isn't like any other."
He told students to keep pursuing their goals, and to never settle, saying, "you have to keep trying and improve...coasting is dangerous."
Students were given the opportunity to ask questions, resulting in candidly humorous responses from the music legend. With topics ranging from stage names to sources of inspiration discussed, audience members were treated to a glimpse into the life of the knighted musician.
The night was rounded out by a concert of selections from John's new album, as well as classics such as "Rocket Man" and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me."
