Immigrants' Rights Groups React to Vehicle Impound Policy Change
Local immigrants' rights groups held a rally Tuesday to express their anger at the LAPD's recession of Special Order 7.
Special Order 7 allowed unlicensed drivers to get their cars back in fewer than 30 days if they were able to provide valid identification, proof of insurance, and had no prior convictions for driving without a license.
The order goes against California state law which says that police have to impound the car of an unlicensed driver for 30 days.
The impound policy was rescinded by Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck this past Friday. It was put into place by Chief Beck last year in an effort to be more lenient on undocumented immigrants.
However, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Terry Green believes the set of rules violates state law and his decision forced Beck to rescind the policy.
The city plans to appeal the judge's ruling.
