Mall Kiosks Offer Convenience, Accessibility to Sign Up for Health Insurance

A new booth by Covered California at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza aims to reach those without Internet access.

A ribbon cutting ceremony at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza heralded a new method to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act: mall booths.

"We were clear that a number of members in the community don't have access to the Internet or computer services at home, so we wanted to bring the application process to where the people are," said State Sen. Holly Mitchell.

The mall booths mark the first time Covered California has offered the option to sign up at a commercial or retail center. State officials anticipate more mall booths opening up in the coming weeks in order to expedite signups for health insurance.

Representatives will be available to help guide applicants through the sign up process through March of next year.
