Protesters Demand Union-Only Hiring by Motion Picture Academy

Union workers protested the hiring of Security Industry Specialists.

While the Oscar Nominees attended their luncheon at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, SEIU workers rallied outside. They demanded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences end their contract with Security Industry Specialists and start hiring union security guards.

"I would love for organizations like the Oscars and the folks that put it on to be supporting good jobs in Los Angeles and actually supporting good jobs everywhere," said SEIU member Sanjay Garla.

Union workers delivered a letter to the Academy asking them to hire a contractor that provides family supporting jobs.

"The letter is basically stating how SIS treats its officers and how it's, it's not good in relation to hiring practices," said union security officer and SEIU member Robert Branch. He said the SIS is is lowering the standard in the security industry.

SIS did not respond to Monday's protest, but on their website there is a section dedicated to their response to SEIU.
