"Voces Unidas USA" Demand Immigration Reform
Chants of "I exist" filled the streets Wednesday outside Our Lady Queen of Angels Church. An immigration reform group called "Voces Unidas USA," or Voices United, urged the federal government to pass new immigration reform.
"We work here, we eat here, we sleep here, we clean your houses, we work hard and take care of your kids," said Gloria Carrasco. "We are working really hard and to not exist is an injustice."
The members want the federal government to reunite families who have been divided due to deportation. Many said they will travel to the Vatican later in March to meet with Pope Francis. They want him to encourage President Barack Obama to push for immigration reform.
"Twenty-eight years without a reform, families are being destroyed," said Martha Ugarte. "We have thousands of kids scared that their parents might be deported."
In Washington, D.C., California Representative Xavior Beccera urged his fellow members of Congress to take action.
The 11 members traveling to Rome come from different organizations across Los Angeles that support immigration reform. They've also collected letters from students and children of immigrant parents who hope to deliver their message to the Pope.
"We can't stay with our arms crossed knowing that our community is suffereing, and that there are more than 1,100 people being deported daily," said Alicia Flores.
Voces Unidas will meet the Pope March 26, one day before President Obama's visit to the Vatican.
maybe this is why you're not welcome
