PETA Protests Commercial Seal Slaughtering
PETA members protested Canada's commercial slaughtering of baby harp seals on Monday by mocking the slaughter of a seal outside the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles.
The slaughtering costs the Canadian government about $7 million a year in subsidies, according to a PETA representative. The United States, European Union, Taiwan, Mexico and Russia, which had been importing 95% of Canadian seal pelts, have all banned seal fur, according to a PETA representative.
The Canadian government said they will continue to defend the seal hunt, because it is an important source of food and income for coastal communities.
