'Suspicious' Easter Candy Prompts Post Office Evacuation

Fire and police crews responded to the incident, which also prompted temporary road closures.

A suspicious package at the post office adjacent to USC prompted a brief evacuation of the building, officials said.

At around 9:00 a.m. witnesses saw fumes coming from a package at the U.S. Post Office, which is located on the 3500 block of South Vermont Avenue.

Police and fire crews both responded to the incident, which also forced the temporary closure of parts of Vermont Avenue. The post office was evacuated for about 90 minutes, officials said, and roads were passable by 11:00 a.m.

Inside the package, police found Easter candy and toys.

City News Service contributed to this report.
