LAUSD Aims to Support LGBT Students through Sports

The Los Angeles Unified School District hopes to make sports safer for LGBT students.

The Los Angeles Unified School District announced it will focus this year’s “OUT for Safe Schools” campaign on creating an accepting atmosphere within physical education classes and athletic teams.

The campaign, in its second year, encourages students and faculty to build safe learning environments for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Coaches and athletic directors will receive whistles to symbolize "blowing the whistle on hate"and training on how to identify and handle LGBT-related bullying and hazing.

Administrators will also urge athletes to serve as ambassadors of tolerance and positivity in hopes that their behavior will rub off on classmates and change campus climates.
