Farmworkers Protest in Downtown L.A.
Supporters of workers from one of the nation’s largest fruit farms were marching in downtown L.A. Wednesday. They want Gerawan Farming Inc., located in California’s Central Valley, to honor the contract that was approved a year ago. Council President Herb Wesson, L.A. County Federation of Labor head Maria Elena Durazo, United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez and hundreds of Gerawan farmworkers kicked off their protest at the Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral located in Downtown L.A. and ended outside Los Angeles City Hall.
“The laws in California are good for farmworkers,” said Suzanne Darweesh, co-chair of Orange County Interfaith Committee. “They’re entitled to a break, they’re entitled to clean water, but they don’t always get these things.”
The Los Angeles City Council met shortly after the protest to consider possible resolutions for the labor negotiations between the opposing parties.
