Robert Herjavec on the Road to Success
Robert Herjavec, Founder and CEO of the Herjavec Group, was at USC Caruso Catholic Center Thursday to talk to students about how to become successful at sales, business, and time management.
Herjavec is known for his appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank, where thousands of entrepreneurs signed up to pitch their business ideas to potential investors.
“Sales is the ability to get someone to do what you want them to do,” Herjavec said.
He said customers do not have the obligation to listen to your presentation nor to buy your product, but it is a sales’ responsibility to capture the customers’ attention and make them want to buy one’s product.
“It’s never about what you said, but what you make them feel,” Herjavec said.
He made the connection to a person, having gone to a three-hour-long speech, but only remembering how the message made the person feel, instead of remembering what was said in the talk.
“Before you start a business, you have to be great at something,” Herjavec said about entrepreneurship.
The best way to go on about doing this is to get a job in the field that one wants to become great at, Herjavec suggested.
“The easiest way to become successful is to watch what successful people do.” Herjavec said. “Your first job is not about the money someone pays you. Your first job is about you getting paid to learn something.”
He believes that everybody has something unique in themselves, and one should figure out what it is, master it, and then use it to one’s advantage.
On the other hand, one’s time management skills have a lot to do with how successful one can be in business, he said.
“Success is like a bank account,” Herjavec said. “The earlier you invest, the earlier you get your payback. If you can’t see the future, you’re stuck in the past.”
He also said the great thing about pursuing a higher education is that you learn how to plan your future and make the best out of your time in school.
Attendees all received a signed copy of Herjavec’s book, “The Will To Win.”
