McCarthy Drops Out Of Speaker Race
House majority leader Kevin McCarthy unexpectedly withdrew from the race to succeed John Boehner as the Speaker of the House today.
McCarthy, who was widely thought to win the nomination, told reporters, "for us to unite, we probably need a fresh face." This decision comes after McCarthy faced scrutiny over the past week from fellow Republicans after he suggested the Benghazi special committee was a ploy to hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign numbers.
After the announcement today, John Boehner requested to postpone the vote until a later date instead of voting on the two remaining candidates. Boehner will continue to serve as the Speaker until the vote is held.
