What were your duties at ATVN? :

Reporter

How did ATVN prepare you for your career?:

ATVN was real-life training. I’m a producer now, but reporting at ATVN helped prepare me for the real world pressure of having to make air, while still doing quality work and being fair and accurate in covering stories.

What is your advice to aspiring journalists?:

Maintain contacts! Seriously, you’ll hear this often, but it’s true—especially fresh out of college, a lot of times it’s your contacts that help you to land that first job. Also, don’t feel like you’re settling if you don’t leap right out of Annenberg and into the world of reporting. I never planned on being a producer, but I’m having the time of my life doing this...and if anything, producing, working the desk, etc. will at least get you in that newsroom. You can always move around once you’re there.

What should graduates keep in mind when negotiating their first job?:

This may sound obvious, but don’t sign a contract without taking it home first. It’s okay to tell the news director you’d like to sleep on it. Really.
