Julia Deng graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California with majors in Broadcast & Digital Journalism and Political Science. She has a passion for investigative journalism and is pursuing a career as a reporter.

At USC, Julia worked as Executive Producer of ATVN, overseeing editorial decisions and production details for live nightly newscasts. She supervised and trained ATVN's newsroom, studio and website staff of more than 250 students. Julia also worked as a day-of-air, special coverage and live shot reporter for three years, providing 24/7 coverage of breaking news stories for the 6 p.m. newscast and ATVN.org.

As a true "one-woman band," Julia writes, shoots and edits her stories herself. She often pairs her packages with web videos, without reporter track, to tease or supplement her TV stories. She shoots and edits these videos - sometimes from the field, on her iPhone - and writes the accompanying text articles. She also has experience coordinating and producing her own mobile live shots via Skype and FaceTime. Memorable ATVN assignments include covering the 20th anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, Paul Walker's death, Occupy L.A. and the 2012 Presidential election.

Away from campus, Julia was part of the NBC Nightly News team in Burbank. She interned at Dateline NBC, CBS2/KCAL9, NBC Bay Area and Cape Town TV News. Julia field produced DWP and Caltrans investigations for reporter David Goldstein, and received Assistant Producer credit for Dateline's season premiere, "The Plot Thickens."

Julia was awarded the $10,000 Leslie Miller Scholarship in 2013 for her "excellent on-air presence" and "commitment to telling stories that make a positive and meaningful difference." She was also a recipient of the USC Academic Achievement Award, and was on both the Annenberg and Dornsife Dean's Lists from 2011-2014.

Prior to discovering her passion for journalism, Julia was intent on pursuing a career in classical music. She studied violin at The Juilliard School for six years, and is always thrilled to cover stories related to the arts. When she isn't chasing the news or furiously scrolling through her Twitter feed, Julia can be found baking gluten-free desserts and expanding her scrapbook of The New Yorker cartoons.
